MADNESS Madness is insanity, imprudence, delusion, foolishness, crazy or stupidity , dangerous behavior. Madness is a sociological phenomenon that affects not only oneself and one's immediate environment but also society. Madness is a term that has historically been used to describe a range of mental health conditions characterized by extreme or irrational behavior, thoughts, or emotions. Also we can say madness is a foolish, impulsive behavior. Madness is a culturally specific reflection of what would more presently be deemed as a kind of mental illness. I do not, however, wish to limit any dialogue of the past according to present understandings, nor do I wish to medicalize conditions such as madness and insanity as “archaic” representations of psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia or psychosis.
